Why winter works
The Sagrada Familia in February is a different experience from the same building in August: you can stand still in the nave, hear the space, and photograph the columns without a stranger's elbow in frame. Tower slots, the hardest thing to get in summer, are usually available at short notice.
The weather cooperates more than northern visitors expect. Rain is infrequent, the sun is out most days, and the low angle of the winter light means the coloured glass performs from mid-morning to mid-afternoon rather than only at the edges of the day.
Christmas and the new year
From late November the Fira de Santa Llúcia sets up beside the cathedral, selling nativity figures including the caganer, the irreverent local tradition. Lights go up along Passeig de Gràcia and the city centre gets busy again for two weeks either side of Christmas.
Els Reis Mags on 5 January is the big family event, with a parade arriving by sea. Many shops close on 25 December and 1 and 6 January, so plan food shopping around those dates.
What to pack and how to plan
A warm jacket, a scarf and one waterproof layer are enough. Buildings are heated less aggressively than in northern Europe, and old apartments can feel cool, so pack a jumper for the evenings.
Plan the outdoor sights for the middle of the day and the indoor ones for the late afternoon, since it is dark by six. That is the exact reverse of summer planning, and it is the main adjustment visitors forget to make.
